We’re nearing the end of June, and our thoughts go to perhaps the most important commemoration of the year – the 250th anniversary of the founding of America. In this Part One we will talk about the foundation of the nation and the ideals that America was established to uphold. The American government was established for a reason, and we will look into that reason.
Following our look into the foundation, we will present a second, upcoming blog where we will look into the achievements of the U.S.A. over 250 years. Have we upheld our founding ideals through the generations? To our eyes, the answer is yes – the land of the free and the home of the brave has kept the ideals in the forefront.
The Foundation of the USA
Let’s begin with a document most people are familiar with, called the Declaration of Independence. This Declaration is considered the founding document of the United States. It asserts and explains that the thirteen colonies are not subject to British colonial rule. On June 11th, 1776 five founders were asked to draft and present the Declaration. Those five were John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert R. Livingston and Roger Sherman. The Declaration justified the independence of the colonies and cited the grievances against the king. They asserted the right of revolution.
From the History website [LINK] we read the following: “The Declaration was unanimously ratified on July 4 by the Second Continental Congress, whose delegates represented each of the Thirteen Colonies. In ratifying and signing it, the delegates knew they were committing an act of high treason against The Crown, which was punishable by torture and death.”
The Courageous Founding Fathers
The men who are today recognized as the Founders are as follows:
- James Madison who was pivotal in writing the Bill of Rights.
- George Washington who became the first President of the U.S.
- Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence.
- Alexander Hamilton who co-authored the Federalist Papers.
- Benjamin Franklin who was a diplomat resolving conflicts.
These men and other delegates designed a government with three branches – the Executive, Legislative, and Judiciary. These three branches form a foundation for wise and just laws and decision making, and the process of democratic voting gives the people a voice in their governance.
Our July 4th Celebration
If we subtract 1776 from our current year, 2026, we get 250 years. The Declaration of Independence brought an end to the subservience of the Colonies in America to the British crown. There is a lot to this story, including the Revolutionary War, which lasted from 1775 to 1783. The Colonies declared independence in 1776, and this brought on conflict which ended with the British surrender at Yorktown in 1781.
What are we celebrating on this upcoming July 4th? We’re celebrating the establishment of a government of the people, by the people and for the people. These are the pillars of a true democracy. Here below is what these statements mean:
Of the people: The government derives its legitimacy and power from the citizens rather than an elite class, monarchy, or outside force.
By the people: Citizens actively participate in the political process, primarily by voting in elections to choose representatives who create and enforce laws.
For the people: The ultimate purpose of the government is to serve the public good, protect fundamental rights, and respond to the needs of the citizens.
Democracy and Freedom

When we understand the issues, we can vote for the men and women who are speaking to our concerns. We thank the Founders for fighting the first Revolutionary War for our democracy. A government for the people and by the people was established 250 years ago. Today it remains strong, and it remains in the hands of the People.
The Declaration We Stand Upon
Before we close, we would like to offer just a few words from the Declaration of Independence, and a [LINK] to the full document.
“When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
“We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, that these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved.”
