Father’s Day is a commemoration we have been waiting for at AMS… a moment in time when we put our minds on the honorable and heroic men in our lives – our Fathers. Let’s begin our salute with a poem:
My Dad, My Hero
You are my hero, my shining star,
Guiding me through life, no matter how far.
With your love and wisdom, you light the way,
Dad, I’m grateful for you, each and every day.
You inspire me to be strong and true,
Dad, I love you, Happy Father’s Day to you!
Let’s begin with our thoughts on what ‘Father’ means: Father is he who furthers you into more knowledge, wisdom and understanding – he sets a standard for his sons and daughters – someone to live up to!
We give a salute to our clients who are Dads, our associates who are Dads, and our readers who are Dads. In all truth, our Fathers light the way, they uphold the standards, and we honor them every day including on Father’s Day.
The History of Father’s Day
We went to the Farmer’s Almanac [LINK] for some of the history and details on this commemoration:
“Father’s Day is celebrated annually on the third Sunday in June in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, India, and a number of other countries around the world.
“Father’s Day celebrates and honors the men who have embraced the essential role of fatherhood. On this day, we also thank fathers and father figures (uncles, grandfathers) for the sacrifices they make, for embracing the responsibility of nurturing and raising children, and for their devotion to their families.”
There is a very painful story behind the first Father’s Day. Back in 1908, in West Virginia, there was a mining accident that killed more than 360 men and boys, and it left nearly 1,000 children fatherless. A woman named Grace Clayton wanted to honor the fathers who died in this accident, so she organized a Sunday service, calling it Father’s Day. Although the service she organized was the first known to honor fathers, it did not turn into an annual event.
Shortly thereafter, a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, did her best to help Father’s Day become a U.S. national holiday. Mrs. Dodd’s father had raised his six children alone on his farm in Washington after his wife died giving birth. Sonora Dodd proposed to the Spokane Ministerial Association and the YMCA that they celebrate a Father’s Day. With help from local churches, community groups, and the Spokane Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), the first Father’s Day celebration was held on June 19, 1910.
In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson visited Spokane and spoke at a Father’s Day service, showing early presidential support. The idea gained momentum over time.
The article goes on to explain how the national recognition evolved:
“Despite widespread support, Father’s Day was not a permanent national holiday for many years. It wasn’t until 1972 that President Richard Nixon signed a law declaring that Father’s Day be celebrated annually on the third Sunday in June. It has been an official, permanent national holiday ever since.”
A Day to Say We Love You
Father’s Day is equally as meaningful as Mother’s Day. It is a time to thank fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, guardians, and other male role models for their love, guidance, and support.
This commemorative day is also an opportunity to acknowledge the vital role fathers play in our lives. Father is a model for leadership and self-esteem.
Father’s active involvement fosters strong connections with children at any age. Boys very much need their dads’ example during their formative years, and it’s not only the boys who need Dad. Father is a role-model for girls as well. Dad’s role is critical at every major developmental milestone.
For the baby, Dad provides unconditional love and security. As children approach their teen years, Dad is a role model of maleness and the masculine identity. He is also protector as the children navigate their teens, helping them avoid destructive peer groups.
A Day to Thank a Hero
Despite widespread support, Father’s Day was not a permanent national holiday for many years. Today the holiday is a time to salute and honor our Dads, and at AMS Fulfillment we have a whole lot of Dads very worthy of honor. This year the third Sunday in June is also the Solstice, so we not only honor our Fathers, we do so the longest day of the year.
Father’s Day is a meaningful day for us at AMS. We take this opportunity to thank all of our fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, guardians, and other male role models for their love, guidance, and support. We appreciate you and we see and honor your example… your hard work, your dedication to a high standard, and your love of family.
Whether it’s a quiet meal or a big celebration, this day is all about showing appreciation for the important role fathers play in our lives. We salute you, Dads… Happy Father’s Day. You’re our Heroes.
